There was some discussion in chat about reserving crop tasks for longer periods, simply because they take a long time to grow. In this way the individual can then reserve a task and take it when the crop is ready. However, this in my view, is counterproductive to the team as a whole.
The whole purpose of the reserve feature was to enable us to work on another task, while we finish up the one we are working on. This means taking the task as soon as we have completed the one we are on. It is not a means to have the clock ticking down on a reserve so that we can then collect it when it's almost finished. If we allow this, I feel it is more likely that a person with a reserved task, having finished their task, will keep the reserve going, while taking quick and easy tasks as they pop up. This leaves the team with even less choice and is something we do not currently allow.
We only have four 135s on the board at any one time. Sometimes 5, but this is usually towards the end of the regatta. We have already had situations of 1 person holding on to a reserve for longer than 4 hours, with 3 crappy 135s remaining on the board, leaving the rest of the team with choices they don't really want, and either waiting for the reserve to be taken, or not realising that no more 135s will come through. So.. we do need to dump 135s if they're not popular, and especially if they have been on the board for over 2 hours, BUT with some of us out of the game for hours at a time, it is difficult for many of us to know, how long a task may have been on the board.
Two tasks were reserved at one point today, it was only temporarily, but, had it been a normal reserve, would have left the rest of the team with only 2 slots to vie for. If we allow long crop tasks to be reserved for more than 4 hours, two crop reserves would bring the choice of 135s to a standstill.
This could be something that we look at for the weekends, when some have finished, as there are not many tasks reserved then anyway. BUT we don't want to hamper those members who are have struggled all week to either find tasks, or get into the game, by giving them even less choice, when they need all the choices they can get.
We definitely need to tighten up the dumping of 135s anyway, but this week has been a really crappy week for tasks, and any changes to lengthening the reserve tasks, I think would just compound the frustration.
